New to this? Here’s the intro.

Last Week (Week 1)

The second week of Spring 2015 Fantasy Anime League brings with it, as usual, an assurance that most of the shows have aired and watching numbers are beginning to stabilize. If your show hasn’t started yet, you should be worrying. On the other hand, the discussion points tend to be fairly inflated, since way more people will watch the first episode or so and want to throw in their say before losing interest, so there are plenty of points to be gained there. But we can talk about all of that when we get to the scores after the jump, right?

Holding onto his first place role for another week despite falling a bit in the overall rankings, lostpikachu had a good week overall. All of his shows have pretty much come into their own, with the only active show that seems to be straggling in points being Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu; all of his other shows are making 30k+ in watching, but Yuki-chan barely scrapes past 15k! It is also not doing great in discussion in comparison to the other shows, a solid ~300 posts behind three other anime. He has some thoughts of his own, too:

Woo first place again! I fell 17 places but 50th is still nothing to scoff at. Now that Haruhi has arrived, I’m hoping the numbers for Yuki start to skyrocket, because Euphonium is still not pulling its full KyoAni weight. Can’t believe Owari worked. If ~70 more people had added it in those last minutes, I wouldn’t have been able to ace it at all.

I did almost as well as lostpikachu in terms of new points this week, which makes sense since our teams are 3/5ths the same. Based on the first episode of Hibike! Euphonium I am getting Hyouka vibes, which makes me worried for the long-term popularity of the show, but it can still easily pick up. Until then, though, I will be watching very carefully comparing its numbers to Denpa Kyoushi on my bench, since they are doing very similar, with Euphonium only beating out Denpa Kyoushi by about 2000 points total. I may not like that show as much, but I’ll sure not complain if it catches on a bit more soon.

Look at that new points number! Cool stuff. Not enough to keep his second place standing, though, as he falls from 2nd to 3rd this week, the gap being still fairly small. Punchline has gotten very mixed reception, explaining its lukewarm opening watching numbers, but with only a real week’s worth of discussion perhaps there is still potential to be unleashed there in a couple weeks’ time. Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken 2 Sure-me continues to be a weird little disappointment as well, unless it enters 2x points sometime soon. Unfortunately, joyfullydoomed’s bench options of Ace of the Diamond and Sidonia no Kishi aren’t doing any better, so he is stuck with the lovable otaku couple for now.

Ouch, that mistake ace. In a reverse of lostpikachu’s situation, Aikijou gambled for OreGairu Zoku over Owari no Seraph, but Owari no Seraph‘s miraculous avoidance of 40k watchers before the Sunday deadline lost him 3000 points. On the plus side, Funimation finally released Kekkai Sensen, and even that single day or so of legal streaming gave Kekkai Sensen a nice push that is sure to grow. Who doesn’t love anime New York, after all?

With our first swap of the season, Hamdog92 swaps out Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu for Arslan Senki, and it seems to be a smart choice for now. Yuki-chan has thus far seen very little attention between the slice-of-life spinoff elements and change in studio from Kyoto Animation to Satelight; meanwhile, Arslan Senki isn’t a huge hit, but the retelling of a classic Yoshiki Tanaka story has found a solid built-in audience that Yuki-chan has failed to secure. Also, Ore Monogatari!! finally begins broadcast with good opening numbers and the Kekkai Sensen boon is also felt here. These newly minted shows push Hamdog92 up one spot from his position last week, and not too far from the next one. It may just be the lackluster discussion points that cause him to stay behind, though.

Falling behind, but still close, aeg2138’s weak spot is very clearly the zany and bizarre Punchline, in terms of both watching and discussion points. Looking back at his bench, Triage X actually outperformed Punchline thanks to its x2 points status, but I can see why he would want to stick with Punchline over Triage X for now at least; Punchline could still catch on, and Triage X might lose its x2 points, and no one wants to be stuck with one of those stinkers for three weeks in a row. Time will tell if it was a smart choice to keep in the MAPPA panty fest.

To be fair, this is how most people feel while watching Punchline.

Rounding out the pack in last place for another week is NeoRevan. Probably not coincidentally, he is the only one among us to have an active show that essentially had not aired even during the second week – Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo just barely aired in time for 3492 people to have checked it out, and significantly less had the time to get in a word about it. That does mean it has a second coming of first impression discussion points to be seen, though, and a whole show’s worth of watching points that esentially still haven’t kicked in. It is still early after all! Meanwhile, he managed to grab an ace for the recently popular tearjerker Plastic Memories, an easy choice as it is his best performing show by far, having switched it in for Denpa Kyoushi. Personally, I would have chosen Yamada, but he has some thoughts on that matter himself:

Plastic Memories surprised everyone I think, which is why it started on my bench (first line up I had it was active), so when it blew up as it did, I had to get it out there. Here, I had 3 main choices to swap it with. Yamada has yet to air, and I personally think it will do really well, so I wanted to give that a chance (also, it is what I originally had replaced PlaMemo with), which left Denpa and Danna. They have very similar numbers (except for drops) but I decided to gamble on one day, Danna getting x2 points. I like Denpa, but I doubt it will get 32k (the number Danna would get with a x2 right now) and Danna also saves me on drop weeks.

And that is the roundup for this week’s anime popularity contest. Next week’s special rule, on top of the usual watching points:

  • +3000*((un)weighted score) points for score ratings on MAL

That is right, it is Gintama‘s turn to shine! Fear me, as I wield a 9.19 average that will surely take the Fantasy Anime League world by storm. Right?

It's ok, I'll move on eventually.
