New to this? Here’s the intro.

Last week (Week 4)

And now it’s time for week 6! Wait…week 6? Something seems to be missing, right…?

Yeah, last week was pretty hectic for me! Senior week, in fact – I spent it with friends and family leading up to my own graduation from university, which means I didn’t have a ton of free time. More importantly, though, I didn’t have a computer to do this properly on! So we will have to do without week 5, but I think we can live. Luckily, there also no special rules this week, just the usual watching and discussion points.

Good to be back.

Thanks for the watermark, Crunchyroll.

Overall results week 6:

  1. 73 (-4) lostpikachu – 1512359
  2. 167 (-6) NavyCherub – 1362646
  3. 231 (-5) joyfullydoomed – 1264285
  4. 261 (-7) Aikijou – 1204283
  5. 267 (+7) Hamdog92 – 1187389
  6. 314 (+1) aeg2138 – 1092644
  7. 336 (+5) NeoRevan – 1038527

Stats like this make me wonder what, exactly, I expected out of Hibike! Euphonium. Well, actually, I can say pretty clearly what it was – a slice of life Kyoto Animation show? That has to be a hit, right? Yet here we are, looking in the face of a reality where a light novel adventure harem show like DanMachi is almost three times more popular. I wonder if maybe these watching numbers are inflated by people who checked out a couple episodes because of all the Hestia hubbub and just left it on their watching lists without continuing. My evidence? The discussion numbers – Euphonium and DanMachi are have similar discussion points, while being overshadowed by Owari no Seraph and, to a ridiculous extent, OreGairu Zoku. At least we know people are actually watching those shows! Unrelated, lostpikachu’s next swap is now available.

As things stand, I am only falling further and further behind. It is sad, because I am not gaining all that many less points than lostpikachu on a week-to-week basis, but my lack of DanMachi is really hurting; had I picked it, I would surely be ahead of him by now. Working with what I have, I am glad at least for WIT Studio’s hit Owari no Seraph, which manages to pull in strong watching numbers and generate tons of discussion, discussion that surely involves some mix of vampire politics, shipping, and shitposting. I’ll leave the ratio to your imagination.

On the other side, I would surely be very scared for my position if joyfullydoomed’s adult sitcom Danna ga Nani wo itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken 2 Sure-me managed to grab that 2x watching points benchmark. As of now, though, that hasn’t happened, so he is left with a middling show that is too short and comedy-focused to generate a ton of talk. Even the divisive mystery Punchline has been proving itself with plenty of talking points in recent weeks; if more people stuck with it, its discussion would surely be giant. As it stands, though, more people are interested in talking about what cool way Souma has managed to tantalize our tastebuds in his eponymous shounen cartoon.

A follow-up to Aikijou’s swap from Punchline to Gintama: Punchline seems to outperform Gintama on weeks like this, earning a total 6000 more points than Gintama this week. I still think it was a good choice, and it will continue to pay off on crazy drop and score weeks, but I wonder about the math overall. We won’t know until the end, of course, but it was quite a gambit. At least Gintama seems to have more to talk about than a certain other comedy show.

Speaking of catching up, Aikijou’s position is being actively attacked by Hamdog92. Just this week, Hamdog92 made a solid 16k more than Aikijou. I chalk this up to the wild success of Shounen Jump surprise hit Ore Monogatari!!. Not only does it have more than satisfactory watching numbers, its discussion points beat out even the biggest shows like angsty action show Owari no Seraph, only really being beat out by the untouchable OreGairu Zoku. Barring some huge twist, I have no doubt Hamdog92 will be moving up in the ranks very soon.

Things aren’t looking quite as good for poor aeg2138. He doesn’t really have any big hitters aside from Rie Matsumoto’s unique and engaging Kekkai Sensen, which succeeds in both watching and discussion numbers but fails to reach the heights of the bigger hits this season. The big disappoint here, really, is Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu. Maybe we should have expected this? The title even tells us Yuki would disappear! Not only has she “disappeared” in her own show in the shadow of monolithic and charismatic Haruhi, but her show itself has “disappeared” from the group consciousness of the MyAnimeList userbase. Nothing seems to go right for that girl, huh?

Bringing up the rear of the pack again, and still not making as many points as aeg2138 above him, NeoRevan is the final victim of the otaku husband curse. Sad, because that is really the only thing holding him back, aside from the ill-advised choice to become an ecchi rebel with High School DxD BorN over OreGairu Zoku; even the late bloomer Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo has managed to install a solid group of dedicated watchers, and Plastic Memories has kept enough people’s interest to keep up its watching and discussion numbers. Speaking of High School DxD BorN, its broadcast dub started recently, but that doesn’t seem to have done a whole lot for its standing. Better luck next time, eh?

And once again, that is it for this week. An upset seems to be coming soon, so stick around to see what comes of that. For now though, let’s see what special rule will shake things up next week:

  • +6000*((un)weighted score) points for score ratings on MAL upon week 7.

Score again! This time double what it was worth last time. Plenty of shows have high watching numbers, but which ones have actually won the hearts of their viewers? Check in next week to find out. Until then.
