Fantasy Anime League: Wideface Edition (Week 7) May 19, 2015

New to this? Here’s the intro.

Last week (Week 6)

And with this week, we are halfway through the season! Positions have been established, points have been gained, anime have been watched (and discussed, and scored, and dropped). About this far in is when the shows people like have really been cemented into Fantasy Anime League history, and our souls sink as we realize we have made terrible, irrevocable choices (or inspired, genius choices, of course).

Anyway, this week was scores, which show us which fanbases really do love their shows and which ones are just going through the motions. Which are real, and which are fakes?

If you ask me, the point gain for things like scores should be more drastic or something. The difference between lostpikachu’s lowest scoring show, Hibike! Euphonium, and his highest scoring show, OreGairu Zoku, isn’t huge. Maybe it should be 6000 points for every half a point a show has, or something like that. Then again, the point gain here is already almost as much as the watching points for each show, and in Kyoto Animation’s case, almost 20k more. Look at me, complaining that I am not losing by enough.

I am kind of surprised Owari no Seraph‘s average score isn’t higher. In fact, it is actually lower than it was during the last score week, despite having moved on from the much-bemoaned school setting into some good old fashioned demon taming and vampire slaying. I suppose that is the nature of unweighted scores – it still takes into account the endless droves of people who start the show because of the hype, don’t like it, don’t keep going, but rate it low anyway. I suppose those kinds of shows are still overall more successful with points than genre hits like Arslan Senki, though – I should keep that in mind for future Fantasy Anime Leagues, shouldn’t I?

That effect continues to influence other shows, too, such as mystery Earth-destroying panty anime Punchline, which didn’t pull any punches with its newest episode, no pun(ch) intended. The people still watching it are probably decent fans of it, but that doesn’t stop people from starting it and hating it based on premise alone. Seriously, why do some people even start shows like this when they’ve made their intentions so clear?

Then there are sequels, and you can’t find a sequel stronger than Shounen Jump comedy powerhouse Gintama. A 9.14 puts it at the fifth highest rated anime on MyAnimeList right now, and it is hardly 6 or 7 episodes in. Unfortunately, even that doesn’t put it too high on the Fantasy Anime League radar, coming out right below Hibike! Euphonium this week. This is a good thing for me, though, since it means I have once again made the right choice in not swapping it in. I feel like future, more powerful score weeks will be more tempting, though.

On the other side of the unweighted score coin, we have shows that don’t seem like they would have universal appeal but end up with pretty high scores anyway. Case in point: Madhouse Jump romance adaptation Ore!! Monogatari, which seems to have captured the hearts and minds of many and earned the much sought after average score of above 8. Impressive, given its genre and how much attention has been called to it from all corners of the internet.

Of course, there will also always be shows that simply do not score well. Triage X is to be expected, I think, given its genre and demographic. Not many expected Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu to be such a flop, though! Only barely scraping ahead of even Punchline, the Haruhi franchise has surely seen better days. Heck, speaking of them, in total Punchline and Triage X each did better this week than Yuki-chan. Is there perhaps a better choice for this slot on aeg2138’s bench?

Finally, NeoRevan may still be in last, but his team is faring better than aeg2138’s above him, earning almost 20k more than his team in total this week. It helps that his shows all score fairly highly – in fact, all of them have gone up in score since the last score week, except for Plastic Memories which has caused a divide in the fanbase by choosing to revel in its very anime humor instead of focusing squarely on the well-timed and written drama it was originally praised for. Will we see an upset from NeoRevan sometime in the future?

Another week comes, another week goes. As you can see, some of us have better prospects for the future than others, but we still have another 7 weeks to see how that plays out. For now, let’s focus on next week:

  • +50 points for each user who has favorited the anime upon week 8.

Favorites! In my experience these don’t amount to many points, but points are points, right? Till next time.
