New to this? Here’s the intro.
Last week: Week 1

In news that doesn’t affect any of us and hardly affects anyone really, the new season of World Trigger was decided by the MyAnimeList staff to be merged into the original World Trigger entry, leaving a gaping hole in the points of anyone who chose that show for whatever reason. I’m sure all the people trying to get the lowest score possible are ecstatic.

More relevantly, Week 2 graces us with its presence, but without any changes in the overall standings among the Wideface competitors. That is a bit of an anomaly, in our personal history at least – the second week usually proves to shake around the fragile ground the first week’s ranks stood on. Personally, I think this is because the season was forced to start seemingly a tad bit earlier than usual, resulting in fewer premieres in that first week and much less time for people to check them out. We’ll see how that pans out in the future.

Also, it is currently Sunday my time as I write this, so I’m actually keeping my promise in terms of schedule this time. Let’s keep it up, me!

Overall ranks Week 2:

  1. 20 (-18) Sestrel – 239004
  2. 30 (+18) lostpikachu – 236489
  3. 62 (-12) aeg2138 – 226647
  4. 63 (+23) NavyCherub – 226498
  5. 112 (+64) NeoRevan – 209753
  6. 161 (+18) Guycot – 190016
  7. 169 (+35) Hamdog92 – 186541
  8. 334 (-35) Aikijou – 127352

Heavy Object (404): 10100
Owarimonogatari (329): 8225
Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (588): 14700
=> 51900

Sestrel says:

Basically all of the shows have started playing by now, so it’s time for the real competition to start. We’ll see how good my team is or not.

Yep. Now that everything relevant has aired, the playing field is much more even, and shows will actually have to start pulling their weight. Two shows that stand out on this team as being fragile in the future are Heavy Object and Owarimonogatari; the former doesn’t seem to be catching on like many thought it would, and the latter is strong in every area except Watching, which is perhaps the most important. Which one ends up being worse in the long run is still up in the air, though.

Team: lostpikachu

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (588): 14700
Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru (297): 7425
=> 47800

lostpikachu says:

Peace out Owarimonogatari, but Sakurako-san just seems to have the fans clamoring for more. While Owari’s score and favorites beat out Sakurako, Currently Watching and Posts are just far outnumbering Owari. It was good while it lasted, but I’m aiming to escape 30th place and beating Sestrel! Besides Lance ’N’ Masques my shows are all in the top places. You must fall, Lance ’N’ Masques. Fall hard.

And a good swap it was, as this new configuration actually gave lostpikachu an advantage over Sestrel in amount of points gained in week 2. With all of his active shows pulling in Watching numbers of over 20000, the gap between lostpikachu and the top quickly shrinks. Coming-of-age anime Comet Lucifer might end up being the weak link here, as giant toddler anime Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai Umatteiru gained an audience very quickly, and no one seems to want to talk about Comet Lucifer. I suppose a seemingly large-scale show like Comet Lucifer only being billed for one cour is keeping people from being excited.

Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru (297): 7425

Continuing a trend, aeg2138 chose to swap out fantasy game anime Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen for Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru. Utawawerumono is having a hard time gathering followers – some intimidated by its pseudo-sequel status, others perhaps by the slow nature of the first episode. Either way, it doesn’t look like Utawawerumono will catch up to Sakurako-san any time soon, so this team is all the better with the change. aeg2138 did miss a chance for another ace this week, since Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry managed to pull far ahead of Gakusen Toshi Asterisk in Discussion points, despite being slightly behind in Watching points. There may be chances yet, as neither show is near the 50k cutoff for aces quite yet, but the difference between these anime shows no signs of widening.

I, too, found myself wanting to join in the Sakurako-san party, taking out terrible sniper anime Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai for the so far more successful mystery show.  It seems Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai may have simply aired too late to catch an audience already captured by the two previous anime with the exact same demographics, Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry and Gakusen Toshi Asterisk. Perhaps it will catch up at some point, but I’m not holding my breath; instead, I am looking toward noitaminA anime Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider for a potential late-bloomer hit. But hey, I’m not great at math.

NeoRevan says:

Much better this week. Cavalry is on my active, can’t remember my thinking on having it on the bench. Kinda hoped Komori would be really popular, but ah well. Hopefully this is the start of a comeback, though with most of the group having the same three shows (Asterisk, Cav, and Owari) its going to come down to the other 2, Though Sakurako (or Bones: The anime for those who also watch American programming) and K seem to be doing reasonably well, in three weeks I’ll check again ’cause Comet Lucifer isn’t doing bad itself. Long story short, I doubt I’ll win (stupid Loli Masque, can’t wait for your drops) but I don’t think I’ll do as bad this season. Hopefully I Don’t Fail This FAL (sorry not sorry, just watched the premiere of Arrow)

The man said it all himself this week, and I don’t have much to add. I will note that swapping in Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry did amazing things to his numbers – he had the biggest jump forward among us this week, a solid 64 places above the previous week. That show alone may secure his spot for weeks to come.

Sitting on his hands may not have been such a smart choice for GuyCot this week – he has Heavy Object on his bench, and just like aeg2138 above him, not acing Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry is a bit of a waste. Not that Heavy Object is guaranteed to do amazingly in the coming weeks – far from it – but it is certainly performing significantly better than ridiculously censored anime Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst, and could have done some work to keep the difference between GuyCot’s point gain and NeoRevan’s new points lower.

Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai (180): 4500
=> 37600

Hamdog92’s swap is an interesting choice. He swapped musical anime Dance with Devils for Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai, which is only about a 3k difference in total points but still an overall improvement – in a vacuum. You see, he also has cleaning club anime Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou on his bench, which performed better this week in both Watching and Discussion. Perhaps Hamdog92 is playing the long game and thinks that the anti-magic academy anime will overtake the super deformed parody anime in the near future, but at least for now it is a questionable decision.

Aikijou says:

I have lost, but it’s ok. I’m excited to watch good anime this time around.

Things already don’t look bright in Aikijou’s future, as he has said in not-so-subtle terms. The teams above him all made more points just this week than he has gotten in the last two so far combined, and exam studying anime Haikyuu!! Second Season is doing so much better than his other shows that it doesn’t look like he will be able to ace in a long time. However, I am always about trying to find what can be improved instead of focusing on all the bad. For example, invisible protagonist anime Yuru Yuri San☆Hai! is already doing better than the seemingly doomed onmyoji anime Garo: Guren no Tsuki, so a swap in the near future probably wouldn’t hurt.

That about wraps up this week in Fantasy Anime League. It was an interesting week filled with swaps, aces, and questionable choices, and the point gain will only grow from here. In fact, next week we are looking at scores in addition to the ever-growing Watching points:

  • +3000*((un)weighted score) points for score ratings on MAL upon week 3.

Sequels tend to to better than entirely new shows in terms of score, since the people that would continue watching a show that far in are pretty enfranchised. Will this shake things up? Will the unholy reign of Lances ‘N Masques ever end? Only time will tell, but I’ll be here to report it either way.
