New to this? Here’s the intro.
Last week: Week 2

Ougi’s amused face above is finally pretty appropriate, as this week of Fantasy Anime League has brought some fun shakeups. Week 3 is about scores – the shows people actually like get a boost, while the shows they are only watching out of a sense of obligation lag behind. This usually means sequels just flat out do better, since typically only fans of the original show will stick around for more, but there are always a couple newcomer hits, too. Let’s see how they played out this time, and who fell from their respective graces this week.

Overall ranks Week 3:

  1. 22 (+8) lostpikachu – 501369
  2. 32 (-12) Sestrel – 495622
  3. 46 (+17) NavyCherub – 490649
  4. 76 (-14) aeg2138 – 479008
  5. 101 (+11) NeoRevan – 466272
  6. 152 (+17) Hamdog92 – 440372
  7. 156 (+5) Guycot – 439168
  8. 333 (+1) Aikijou – 334967

lostpikachu says:

If Haikyuu had just had 100 of its 16,000 Plan-To-Watchers put it in ‘Watching’ instead, I would have been able to Ace it and get 3000 extra points. It has 4k more PTWs than Asterisk and Cavalry, and it is driving me insane. I may have passed Sestrel this week, but the real challenge is just beginning! Yeah!!

lostpikachu passes Sestrel in the first change-up this week. It was essentially inevitable, as his team is simply net stronger than Sestrel’s and proved that plenty last week – it just needed a little more time to make up for that week 1 head start. Comet Lucifer continues to lag behind, despite still being a strong show to have – that score is not a good sign at all. Time will tell if it is worth keeping around forever, but we aren’t much closer to seeing the future yet.

Sestrel says:

Welp, I guess I saw this coming. Heavy Object was a disappointment in every way, and has been banished from my team. Booooooooooooooo!!!

At the beginning of the season, I was really regretting not picking up Heavy Object. The idea of the show combined with the writer of the source material and the semi-established fanbase had me wishing I had noticed it more during my planning. If you had told me the noitaminA slow burning mystery show The Perfect Insider was going to do better than Heavy Object so quickly, I would have called you a liar. Here we are though, and that swap was a good idea. It’s all about the little things.

I praised misanthropist anime The Perfect insider up there, but an even bigger surprise for now is that Monty Hall anime Owarimonogatari is still doing better. It has been kind of slow to pick up watchers, having only barely passed the 20k mark this week, but it is holding on for the moment. If The Perfect Insider passes it, I only hope that it does so in a couple weeks when I actually have a swap available again. For now though, it’s all good – I passed aeg2138 this week, and I am making more points weekly than Sestrel, so everything being the same, I should be ahead of her eventually.

I ribbed aeg2138 a bit last week for missing the ace on Hulu exclusive anime Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, but luckily for him Cavalry has been doing just fine this week, too. It was a pretty close call, actually; as lostpikachu noted, we have been closely watching Haikyuu and Cavalry‘s point differences in hopes of being able to ace Haikyuu this week, but Cavalry ended up staying ahead by a hair, so everyone who missed out on it last week was given a second chance. Also, check out that Heavy Object score – that’s low, real low. Maybe it will get higher as the people that like it stick around, but under 7 is not a good place to be.

NeoRevan says:

Well, I saw this coming. I did some stuff called math (even we Accounting Majors can do basic arithmetic) and there seems to be no way for me to catch Navy unless either Haikyuu starts to burn like a thousand suns or K suddenly gets popular again. Baring that, the rest of our teams are basically the same… so here I am. Back on auto pilot, but at least at a higher position than last week. Though, with Sestrel falling, I might actually manage to take third.

I wouldn’t say K isn’t popular. If anything, I’m a little surprised that it is still so strong after such a long break since the first season. Really, this is more of a lesson in how sequels work. Crazy colors anime K: Return of Kings has more watchers than Owarimonogatari probably because of its lower barrier of entry, but Owarimonogatari has a higher score because of how enfranchised its fanbase is. Haikyuu, though, gets the best of both worlds, being a sequel hot off the heels of the original show. Sequels are tricky business, but there are still patterns to look out for. Don’t be intimated by sequels!

Hamdog92 says:

Yeah I beat Guycot!  I’m gonna keep catching up!

The last rank swap comes as Hamdog92 said so eloquently. Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai is slowly catching up to the rest of the respectable shows, but its score isn’t helping matters. Somehow, Comet Lucifer‘s score is actually lower. I don’t think I’ll ever get over how much people are disappointed in that show, but I also don’t think many people will actually drop it, since sticking around for just one cour isn’t a huge time investment anyway. What a weird little situation.

Guycot says:

I would like to blame the Pope and Kim Davis for my position, but the Booty Warrior shall return in week 4. On another note Garo had a disappointing episode 2 and needs to step it up, but otherwise so far though the season seems to have some decent shows.

It’s kind of hard to watch Guycot’s situation – his team is pretty dang solid outside of having possibly the worst performing sequel this season in consensual servant anime Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst. His bench holds some potential, though. Neither Heavy Object nor Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai are doing that great, as I’ve talked about, but they are both doing better than Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst in terms of watching numbers at least. A switch may be in order if Guycot wants to keep up with the couple spots ahead of him. Maybe that will help?Screenshot_187

Team: Aikijou
New points: 207615
All points: 334967

Week 3 additional points:

Haikyuu!! Second Season
- Score (8.87): 26610
Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider
- Score (7.41): 22230
Young Black Jack
- Score (7.44): 22320
Yuru Yuri San☆Hai!
- Score (8.09): 24270
=> 115350

Aikijou probably isn’t going anywhere from here, but the swap of Garo: Guren no Tsuki to Yuru Yuri San☆Hai! is a decent but small bump, given Garo‘s rather unfortunate numbers across the board. Yuru Yuri‘s average is above 8, which is expected for a popular sequel, but it seems rather low compared to the other sequels this season. I suppose even the loyal fans to a slice of life comedy show don’t rate them very highly. Things don’t look bright.

That is it for this week. Don’t forget to keep all the different factors of a sequel’s potential success in mind when forming your teams in the future – it could mean the difference between a Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst and a Haikyuu!! Second Season. Next week, we have a look at drop numbers, in addition to discussion:

  • −4 points for each user who has anime under “Dropped” upon week 4.

May your shows be well-liked and stay off the drop lists. See you again next Sunday.
