New to this? Here’s the intro.
Last week: Week 7

We have seen favorites before, and we’ve seen drops before, too. Now this week, the aftermath of combining these contrasting additional point elements gets to show itself off. As a general rule, the really high watching shows have a similarly growing drop rate, but also favorites that more or less make it all a wash. Sequels get the benefit of low drops and high favorites, since people already like them plenty, and the best of the best overcomes these silly rules and just do well in every area. With that, let’s start yet another week of looking at numbers and complaining about them like the trash we are.

Overall ranks Week 8:

  1. 11 (-3) lostpikachu – 1831355
  2. 40 (+8) NavyCherub – 1811942
  3. 61 (–) Sestrel – 1782246
  4. 89 (+7) NeoRevan – 1727113
  5. 104 (-5) aeg2138 – 1707376
  6. 125 (-5) Guycot – 1677590
  7. 157 (-8) Hamdog92 – 1614049

lostpikachu says:

I was really hoping Asterisk’s forum posts would inch it ahead of Haikyuu just enough to make Haikyuu not aceable but oh well. Still stuck behind 10 people in first place, and with nukes in place, it’s about to become a very scary game for the next couple of weeks.

It may appear as if lostpikachu has fallen in the ranks, but technically he hasn’t. With more of the tied users ahead of him taking the plunge and sending in their Haikyuu!! Second Season aces, first place becomes more filled with users whose scores resemble a scene from Osomatsu-san while lostpikachu sits firmly in his sole second place role. Unfortunately for him, though, his active team exactly resembles the current active teams of those first place denizens, and his bench holds less potential than most of their’s, at least for now.

And, like the situation described above, my active team is just like lostpikachu’s, rendering me unable to even have hope of catching up unless something otherworldly happens to something on my bench. As long as we’re making the exact same amount of points every week, there isn’t any room for change, but even so I am pretty happy with how my season has played out overall. I’ve never had such a nice showing before, and it feels good.

It is interesting to compare rejuvenated mystery anime Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider to light novel mystery anime Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru. Despite The Perfect Insider‘s lower watching and favorite numbers, it seems to generate more discussion, while Sakurako‘s fans are a tad more quiet about their show. If that counted for just a bit more, Sestrel would be in a better position, but as it stands Sakurako‘s more immediate appeal leaves it the winner, even if its fans aren’t quite as engaged with it as The Perfect Insider‘s. Not that this matters much to Sestrel – her situation allows her to pretty much go auto-pilot unless NeoRevan catches a real lucky break.

NeoRevan says:

So, moving up in the world. There is a chance, slight though it may be, that I can ace my whole starting line up. Its really my only hope at this point to catch Sestrel. I’m honestly running out of things to say cause at this point, all I can do is stay the course.

So close to the current top-scoring team combination, yet the lack of Haikyuu!!‘s rabid fanbase with almost 400 favorites and only 99 drops seems an almost insurmountable barrier to NeoRevan’s hopes of catching Sestrel. On the bright side, in the overall scheme of things NeoRevan is actually steadily climbing up the ranks. There is a volleyball-net shaped wall, of course, but his showing despite that handicap is impressive.

aeg2138 swapped out Comet Lucifer in the nick of time, as its unbelievably abysmal showing landed it 7th place from the bottom in one of the most intense falls from grace I’ve ever seen in this game. Comparatively, Urawarerumono is a godsend, at least for this week, if only because not enough people are watching it to make its drops as bad as Comet Lucifer‘s. Heck, it even managed to profit between its drops and favorites, which not even heavy hitter Gakusen Toshi Asterisk can manage to say about itself.

Guycot, who fell behind aeg2138 some time ago, has some hope of reclaiming his spot in the future. This is mostly thanks to rabbit sniper anime Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai, which made out just a few hundred points shy of The Perfect Insider. It’s been slow going for the least popular magic light novel trifecta show this season, but even if it never catches up to its siblings, it could prove to be a manageable mid-tier pick in the second half.

The only one of us to still actually have Comet Lucifer on his active team, Hamdog92 managed the impressive feat of actually losing points overall from all of his drops and favorites combined. This lead to a pretty sharp drop of eight ranks, and generally humorous stats. Maybe it is the right choice in the long run; I haven’t done any sort of three-week estimation comparing Comet Lucifer and his benched shows, Dance with Devils and Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou, but this week makes it look like Comet Lucifer might have not been a great thing to keep around.

That wraps it up for the amusing Favorites/Drops week. Next week doesn’t have any special points to gain – not even discussion – but it does mark the beginning of Wildcard eligibility. There are a number of things to choose from, so I’ll just leave the details for you to peruse:

  • Wildcard
All players are given the opportunity to choose 1 of the following options as a wildcard starting on week 9 of the FAL season:

    1. The booster. Add a one-time 3000 point bonus to the team’s score for the week.
    2. An extra swap. At a cost of 1500 points, immediately swap a bench anime with an active anime. To use this wildcard, the player must 1) send a PM saying he or she wants to use the wildcard swap and 2) post in the Bench Swaps thread as if the player were making a normal swap.
    3. The nuke (up version). At a cost of 1500 points, subtract X points from the team above or at the same rank as the team of the player using the nuke.
    4. The nuke (down version). At a cost of 1500 points, subtract X points from the team below or at the same rank as the team of the player using the nuke.

The team rankings of the previous week will be used for a nuke. X = 6750 in weeks 9–12, 5750 in week 13, and 4750 in week 14. If a player uses the nuke and the rank above/below is shared by more than 1 team, the nuke receiver will be determined randomly.

There are a number of ways all of these things could combine and play out, and of course quite a few weeks ahead for them to happen too. Till then.
