New to this? Here’s the intro.
Last week: Week 2

The first drop week brings another upset, with a certain player moving up above two others. Others find themselves gasping for air as their teams quickly run out of steam, and still others find aces in the hole continuing to shine ever brighter. I don’t know why this is getting so flowery, so I’m gonna shut up now and move on to the actual content here.

Hamdog92 says:

Like a surfer riding out a vicious onslaught of waves, I have successfully navigated the first drop week that has slammed into our league. I outscored my immediate rival, Guycot, by 2714 points this weeks and still rank some 10 places ahead of him. I suspect that we will be embattled like this for the rest off the season, a fight that I am looking forward to winning and do believe I have the numbers to make it so.

Waves may not die, but they definitely scatter the competition. A rising threat, NeoRevan, has been usurped by the likely true final boss, aeg2138, who outscored me this week by 4790 points. The source of his supremacy comes from the fact that he possesses both Kiznaiver and Re:Zero. The question that will determine this coming battle between us will be whether the collective power of the #1 and #2 top scoring anime can outscore the combined strength of the #3, #4, #5, and #6 top scoring anime.

This is something we will learn in the coming weeks. aeg2138 can match me by moving Flying Witch into his active team, But to that maneuver I will simply one-up our shared Flying Witch by moving in Space Patrol Luluco into my active team.

He covers most of the prevalent talking points here, but I thought it important to point out one more difference between the top two shows and those that follow them: in an unusual development, the most popular shows in watching numbers are also less dropped than the other less-so-but-still-popular shows. As in, they are not only attracting viewers, but retaining them. Normally we expect the really popular stuff to be pretty decently dropped since many will watch it because everyone else is and not because they would actually like it, but Kiznaiver and Re:Zero are managing the best of every world. Long term, it’s an  uphill battle for Hamdog92 to keep himself at first place.

Guycot says:

My frustration of being unable to ace because of Twin Exorcists is immense. Next week I should be able to ace but I really wanted to this week so I could get extra points before bringing in another show. Anyway I’m closer to Hamdog now in points and it’s a small enough gap that first place is obtainable.

A message to aeg2138: https://youtu.be/8Fh6eLXGmog
A message to NeoRevan: https://youtu.be/dj20Ao4Vw9w

Actually, if he had been able to ace, Guycot would have made very slightly more points tham Hamdog92 this week. Not enough to change the rankings as they stand of course, but it’s significant that a thing as small as an ace is enough to make up for their current gap.  Of course, he was helped tremendously by having Ushio to Tora on his team, which as a sequel has almost no drops. A real race going on here.

lostpikachu:

The ride never ends, but it sucks because I’m on the drop tower.  My only saving grace will be loads of people grabbing Mayoiga at the end to keep me afloat in coming weeks.  At least I will be able to ace next week since Joker Game finally passed 45k.

Indeed, the drops and lack of discussion for lostpikachu’s shows put him a disparaging 40k points behind Guycot, not to mention others who did even better than that. These weeks will be increasingly painful for lostpikachu, who has no shows below 1300 drops on his team as things stand. A dastardly difficult deficit.

You might not guess it based on his current placement, but aeg2138 beat every other player here in terms of new points for the week. Having the top two shows as well as plenty of shows with low drops means he has everything to gain and nothing to lose on weeks like this. It’s still a bit of a climb to the top, but in terms of long-term payoff, aeg2138 can probably expect this to be just the beginning of his ride.

After this week I really am just gonna have to bite the bullet – Christian anime Bakuon!! will have to make way for loli dragon anime Cerberus, even if the risk of moving Cerberus in is high. There is plenty to gain by making that swap, and if it loses its 2x along the way, so be it, because this just isn’t acceptable as-is.

Much like aeg2158, having shows with few drops put him above much of the pack this week. Also, I didn’t mention this before, but Re:Zero‘s discussion hasn’t slowed almost at all, and shows no sign of doing so in the near future. As far as top shows go, Re:Zero might go down as one of the best of all time, because it is overperforming in just about every aspect. Will that keep up in the future? As far as I can tell, yes, and that is pretty scary for anyone who doesn’t have it on their teams.

Last season, I had some fun with the overall loser of our league. This time, Sestrel has taken that mantle, and is probably doing even worse. She not only didn’t break 200k new points for the week – she didn’t even come close, and her bench is in even worse condition. Even the low drops on urban horror anime JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai don’t mitigate the damage. On the plus side, Sestrel may finish the overall worst we’ve ever had here, which would be kind of impressive in itself.

And that’s the week once again. Next week has not one but two special rules, which is pretty fun:

+25 points for each user who has favorited the anime upon week 5.

+2000 points for each English-speaking region that simulcasts the anime in English in each of the following regions: USA, Canada, UK/Ireland, and Australia/New Zealand. The regions must be confirmed on MAL News’ official Spring 2016 Simulcast List thread. The number of companies that simulcast an anime is irrelevant; only which region(s) it gets simulcast in matter. Simulcast points are counted in week 5.

The second of those things is becoming less and less relevant as time goes on obviously, but there are still some sad shows not able to acquire those rights (and some shows only streamed in a few places). We’ll see how that goes in week 5.
