(The following is a write-up about the two-episode OVA Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, part of Reverse Thieves’ Secret Santa 2017 project. It’s not really a review or an essay, so I just labeled it “thoughts”. It’s also kind of late, which I’m really sorry about, but here it is!)

Anime Review: Medaka Box July 13, 2016

Back in June I wrote up a review for Sentai Filmworks’ complete collection of Medaka Box. At this point this review is a fair bit old, but I kept forgetting to post it here. Overall, Medaka Box is only a tame introduction to the great stuff the manga eventually has in store, but it’s still a pretty decent time, and I didn’t at all mind watching it again. Check out my full thoughts over at The Fandom Post.

New to this? Here’s the intro.
Last week: Week 4

This post is very late, for very specific reasons. That is, if you follow the drama on-site at the Fantasy Anime League club on My Anime List, you’d know that the results were posted a couple days late thanks to some confusion surrounding Space Patrol Luluco’s streaming locations (relevant to this week’s scores). Those were also the days I had off. It was going to be a really on-time post, yet fate had other plans. But there are still things here!

New to this? Here’s the intro.
Last week: Week 2

The first drop week brings another upset, with a certain player moving up above two others. Others find themselves gasping for air as their teams quickly run out of steam, and still others find aces in the hole continuing to shine ever brighter. I don’t know why this is getting so flowery, so I’m gonna shut up now and move on to the actual content here.

New to this? Here’s the intro.
Last week: Week 2

Some ranks are shaken up this week, and the volatility of it all is exciting. This is honestly one of the most fun seasons of Fantasy Anime League we’ve played, and definitely the most potentially interesting one since we started recording them here – while our relative places are clear, just about no one is safe, as shows continue to grow and change and different stats have heavy impacts on different weeks. We even have someone in first who has never been there before!

Last week: Week 1

This week’s post is uh, a little late. Again! Won’t be next time, I promise. Gotta get back in the groove of doing these. On the plus side, most of the players commenting didn’t send me their thoughts until today either, so you get some more thoughts from others than you might have otherwise, which is great because no one needs to read me ramble.

All right, on to the rambling then.

New to this? Here’s the intro.

The first week of Fantasy Anime League has come. This is (basically) the one-year anniversary of me making these posts, too, which is pretty neat. I don’t even remember why I started doing them, but it’s a pretty relaxing way to spend time, so I don’t regret it. The best part is getting to expand my library of screencaps with useful lines. It’s like watching my weekly anime with two brains that have entirely different goals.

OK, I’ll stop. Time for numbers.

Here at Wideface, we have a tradition of participating in MyAnimeList’s Fantasy Anime League (FAL). If you aren’t interested in the details, it essentially boils down to a fantasy sports game like fantasy football, except instead of choosing from athletes, we choose from anime that will be airing in the upcoming season. The goal, of course, is to choose the shows we think will be the most popular, gaining points from the number of watchers, the amount of discussion around each episode, and various other factors. If you are interested in the gritty details, I have some cool links for you:

When we play together, though, we like to throw in some rules of our own, as well as consequences for losing (and awards for winning)! Every Sunday from here on out, I will be posting an update about our teams and their relative placings, as well as other details and even comments from our participants themselves.

In this post, I will be detailing our internal rules, as well as our teams as they are at the start and comments from (most of) the participants on their teams.

As you probably know, every season there is a veritable deluge of new anime to choose from. As you probably also know, most of these shows are not worth your time. This has not stopped me, however, from watching just about everything I could reasonably get my hands on since the introduction of Power Ranks on this very blog inadvertently gave me possibly the worst habit of all time.

The bright side is that my bad habit is to your benefit, and I can sift through every single new premiere and let you know if I think they are worth checking our or not. As you’ll see, that will come in the form of a couple paragraphs and a dreaded score. Fear not, though – these scores are more like guides, and each one has a basic meaning attached as follows:

  • 1/5 : I found nothing salvageable about this show. Even if you are a fan of the genre, the studio, or the writer, it is probably in your best interest to give it a skip.
  • 2/5 : At the most, a genre recommendation. There probably isn’t anything special or exciting here, so it is easily skippable, but if you really like shows like this you might give it a shot anyway.
  • 3/5 : Solid attempt at whatever this show is trying to do. Very little or nothing outstanding can be found in this show so far, but it has established a solid base that a decent show can be built from.
  • 4/5 : Great premiere. Captures your attention, keeps it, has the requisite hooks that make you want to come back for more next week. The only reason I can see you not trying this out is if you absolutely hate the genre or something similar.
  • 5/5 : Watch this now. There are little or no missteps whatsoever to be found here; load this show up right now and bask in the glory of what is surely the beginnings of something magical.

Pretty simple, right? So with that in mind, let’s jump into these shows.

It’s been 14 weeks and 15 Fantasy Anime League posts, along with many others, but all good things must end. For us, that means this weekly column is over until the Spring season comes and Fantasy Anime League returns. Until then, though, we have one last week of stats to peruse as well as the final results of our internal competition, including the shows we will each be required to watch before the next Fantasy Anime League comes around.
