Last week: Week 9

Woah! First Fantasy Anime League update of December. Time sure flies – shows are reaching their double digit episode counts, next season’s potential offerings are being perused (did you know they are making a Phantasy Star Online 2 anime, in the year of our Lord 2016?), and people are making their mandatory top shows of the year lists. We still have a solid month or so of Fantasy Anime League to sift through, though, so things continue to truck on anyway.

Last week: Week 8

It’s a rather unexciting week of Fantasy Anime League, as the only source of points is the relatively steady and unsurprising watching numbers. Wildcards are now eligible to be used, but it is a bit too early for most people to justify using them – a nuke now doesn’t guarantee much in the long term, a boost is consistent the whole season and probably shouldn’t be used until the very end when you know you will not have to use any of the other choices, and so on. Still, this is my weekly ritual, so I’m going to talk about it anyway.

Last week: Week 7

We have seen favorites before, and we’ve seen drops before, too. Now this week, the aftermath of combining these contrasting additional point elements gets to show itself off. As a general rule, the really high watching shows have a similarly growing drop rate, but also favorites that more or less make it all a wash. Sequels get the benefit of low drops and high favorites, since people already like them plenty, and the best of the best overcomes these silly rules and just do well in every area. With that, let’s start yet another week of looking at numbers and complaining about them like the trash we are.

Last week: Week 6

This week Haikyuu!! Second Season was actually ace-able over Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry. It was only by a very small margin, so it is understandable that most people didn’t notice until it was too late, but it speaks to how the game has evolved since the beginning. Having a high watch count isn’t enough anymore – really successful shows are pulling in huge numbers from other sources, too, most notably for this week, score. It is likely that Haikyuu!! Second Season will still be eligible to be aced sometime in the near future for those who missed it, but it represents something a little more than those 3000 points, anyway. Let’s look at those numbers and learn.

Last week: Week 5

We’re almost halfway through the season, and a small break in the insanity dawns on week 6. There are no special rules, no extra points being divvied out by the anime gods, just a good and simple count of which shows people are watching and which ones they are talking about. As such, there is more speculation from me than usual this week, and I will attempt to guess how things will go even though there are still 8 more weeks for events to unfold. Impatient, some people may call me, and I wouldn’t object.

Last week: Week 4

As Week 5 rolls in, we get to take a gander at simulcasts and favorites. Simulcasts are a fairly boring subject nowadays, since it is actually more rare for a show to not be streamed legally somewhere in the eligible English-speaking regions counted for our purposes. However, favorites are much like scores – the powerful shows have consistently high favorites, while the next tier is largely decided by these small differences. It’s early for things to be thrown off too much by them, but they are an omen of things to come, and we can try to predict the future for now.

Last week: Week 3

Four weeks in brings us our first really dense week in terms of sheer stats. Every show counts for three separate point increases or decreases – the usual watching points, the bi-weekly discussion points, and a special “gift” for everyone in the form of negative points for drops. Drops can look pretty dang silly depending on how successful the show is otherwise. Sequels obviously won’t have many drops as a general rule, which makes up a little bit for their typical drop in viewers from one season to the next. Everything else is pretty susceptible to high drop numbers, but the really successful, high-tier shows are usually not fazed too much by the small sacrifice every week. Shows on the precipice of popularity can really take a beating, though, as we will see from this week’s results.

Last week: Week 2

Ougi’s amused face above is finally pretty appropriate, as this week of Fantasy Anime League has brought some fun shakeups. Week 3 is about scores – the shows people actually like get a boost, while the shows they are only watching out of a sense of obligation lag behind. This usually means sequels just flat out do better, since typically only fans of the original show will stick around for more, but there are always a couple newcomer hits, too. Let’s see how they played out this time, and who fell from their respective graces this week.

Last week: Week 1

In news that doesn’t affect any of us and hardly affects anyone really, the new season of World Trigger was decided by the MyAnimeList staff to be merged into the original World Trigger entry, leaving a gaping hole in the points of anyone who chose that show for whatever reason. I’m sure all the people trying to get the lowest score possible are ecstatic.

More relevantly, Week 2 graces us with its presence, but without any changes in the overall standings among the Wideface competitors. That is a bit of an anomaly, in our personal history at least – the second week usually proves to shake around the fragile ground the first week’s ranks stood on. Personally, I think this is because the season was forced to start seemingly a tad bit earlier than usual, resulting in fewer premieres in that first week and much less time for people to check them out. We’ll see how that pans out in the future.

Also, it is currently Sunday my time as I write this, so I’m actually keeping my promise in terms of schedule this time. Let’s keep it up, me!

Well, it’s week one yet again. Week one brings lots of things – a completely volatile ranking for everyone, a bunch of shows just having not started yet, and usually a show that does really well right off the bat but turns out to be misleading. It also seems to be the time of the season when everyone actually has enough energy and care levels to comment on their situations. We have all of that and more in this week’s results, so let’s check them out already.
